What is biometric data?

Due to European Union legislation, all new Dutch residence permits must have a chip that contains fingerprint data and a digital photo, also known as biometric data.

What does it mean for international students coming to Leiden?
For non-EU/EEA students coming to the Netherlands this means that before being issued with a Dutch visa or residence permit, you must first have your digital photo and fingerprint data recorded. For students requiring a visa to enter the Netherlands this generally takes place at the Dutch embassy in the country where the visa will be issued. For students requiring a residence permit only, this takes place after arrival in the Netherlands, either during special biometric data sessions at Leiden University, or at a local Immigration Department Office.
