What is an exchange programme?

An exchange programme involves an agreement between two universities to exchange students. The advantage is that you do not have to pay tuition fees at the foreign university since you already pay tuition fees in Leiden. There are many exchange agreements within Europe (the Erasmus Agreements) and beyond (the bilateral agreements). In addition, Leiden also participates in the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP), an interesting programme particularly for students who want to study in the US. Another advantage of an exchange programme is that you are guided through the application procedure. In an exchange programme you simply follow part of your Leiden study programme abroad – so you cannot use an exchange programme to obtain a diploma abroad.
